According to IDC, the smartphone market was shrunk. The shipment of smartphones from October to December 2022 was about 300.3 million units. This number was decreased by 18.3% compared to the same period of 2021. 18.3% is the most decreased drop in the market. In addition, the shipment of smartphones was decreasing for six consecutive quarters, when we compared it to the same period of the previous year.

In fact, the shipment of smartphones from July to September 2022 was decreased by 9.7% compared to the same period of 2021. It means that the market was struggling more. An analysist shared her thought that high inflation ratio and fear of recession prevent consumers from buying new smartphones. When it comes to the entire year of 2022, the shipment of smartphone would be 1.21 billion units. This number has been the worst since 2013. It also means that the smartphone market was shrinking in 2022. The same company, IDC, predicts that the shipment of smartphones in 2023 may be increased by 2.8% in 2023. However, the company might modify its prediction later of the year.
