Big decisions

In the first half of 2023, there were several big news related to Japanese smartphone manufacturers. News was not good for them. For example, Kyocera decided to stop its smartphone business for consumers (B2C) in 2023. As of June 6th, 2023, the Japanese company declared that it would continue the smartphone business for business users.

Kyocera manufactures many types of products. They are industrial ceramics, solar power generating systems, telecommunications equipment, office document imaging equipment, electronic components, semiconductor packages, cutting tools, and components for medical and dental implant systems. Kyocera acquired Sanyo’s mobile phone business in 2008. Even though the company is really big in terms of its sales revenue, it is struggling to keep the smartphone business.

Another example is Balmuda, which is a Japanese design and manufacturing company. It produces small appliances and computer accessories. Also, its products have won international recognition for their designs. The Japanese company was trying to differentiate itself from its competitors by its specific design. In fact, it entered the smartphone market in 2021, but it decided to withdraw only 2 years after entering. Why are Japanese smartphone makers struggling to compete in the smartphone market?
