Google manufactures its own chips

According to its company blog, Google announced that Tensor will power the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro later this fall.

Tensor is Google’s first custom-built a system on a chip (SoC) specifically for Pixel phones. SoC combines the required electronic circuits of various computer components onto a single, integrated chip. SoC is a complete electronic substrate system that may contain analog, digital, mixed-signal or radio frequency functions.

What is Pixel?

Pixel phones are pure Android Phone and they have several unique features. For example, it has fast charging via USB Type C. They also include unlimited Google Photos cloud storage, 24/7 phone or chat support and Google’s virtual assistant. What’s more, they are equipped with a state-of-the-art laser that focuses on 4K camera and virtual reality performance

Benefits from Tensor

New Pixels have new design that combines the same beautiful aesthetic across software and hardware with Android 12. This is because the new Tensor SoC makes everything better. For example, they can upgrade the rear camera system.

However, the improved sensors and lenses are now too big to fit into the traditional square. Therefore, the new design gives the whole camera system a new home with the camera bar. Every piece of the chip can customize to run Google’s computational photography models. For users, this means entirely new features, plus improvements to existing ones.

Camera in SNS era

In this Social Networking Service (SNS) era, the quality of cameras in smartphones becomes more critical. Consumers want to take photos anywhere, anytime and to share them through SNS including Instagram. As a result, they choose their smartphones by the quality of camera more than before. Even low-end model, a consumer chooses a smartphone that has four cameras, for instance.

Google wants to sell more Pixels now since web or mobile advertisement faces severer restrictions due to the privacy concern. To adapt this new trend, the interface between consumers and hardware becomes more important.

It goes without saying that its technology rival, Apple, shows its excellence in both hardware and software. Thus, Google must understand consumer needs and improve their products based on them. That is why the US technology giant develops its own chips to improve the quality of its smartphones.

Thanks to Tensor, it enables Google to maximize Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). As a result, Google can make use of its core technology to improve the quality of cameras. Therefore, the next question is how to sell Pixels in this tight competition, the smartphone market.
