As of March 17th, 2021, Microsoft announced that it expands collaboration with Repsol to accelerate digital innovation and energy transition.

Repsol and Microsoft have renewed their strategic collaboration focused on accelerating Repsol’s digital transformation and the global energy transition. The companies will co-innovate to build new AI-powered digital solutions, and as part of a long-term cooperation. In fact, Repsol will provide Microsoft with renewable energy in Europe, including Spain. In addition, Repsol will expand its use of Microsoft cloud solutions to power its operations.

Both companies will bring together their deep expertise in the energy sector and digital technologies, respectively. Repsol and Microsoft explore collaboration and various initiatives that will accelerate industry transformation.

For example, one of Initial focus areas is the use of disruptive technologies to enable autonomous systems and efficient operations. Safety for employees and support the development of advanced energy solutions such as biofuels and energy storage are also important.

Collaboration is necessary for sustainability

The collaboration between Repsol and Microsoft gives us several insights.

First, big companies should take initiatives to realize carbon neutrality. Microsoft is one of the largest companies across the globe and has tremendous cash. Therefore, the US tech giant invests in tons of money for the ambitious goal. However, the company needs support from companies in the energy sector like Repsol. This is because Microsoft’s business does not exist without energy and it cannot supply enough energy by itself.

On the other hand, we can see another insight: Digital Transformation. As we see the other article about digital transformation, Digital transformation adds value to every customer interaction. Even in the energy industry, the companies including Repsol must take digital transformation into consideration more seriously. However, capabilities in the digital companies are totally different from those in energy companies. Thus, the collaboration does make sense.

Carbon neutrality and digital transformation are necessary for companies to make their business more sustainable. We will not be surprised if we hear the news about further collaboration among different industries.
