We are living what is called“VUCA” world. VUCA is the acronym represents Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus used this word in the leadership theories for the first time in 1987. Also, the U.S. Army War College introduced the concept of VUCA to describe the more volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous multilateral world perceived as resulting from the end of the Cold War.
As we see above, the concept of VUCA is not new, but we have been seeing it more often now. Of course, the pandemic is just an example that we are living in VUCA world. In fact, who could imagine that the pandemic changed our world in 2019? Also, there are so many incidents relating to the concept of VUCA such as natural disasters, climate change and others.
In other words, we are experiencing unpredictable or/and uncontrollable situations more than before. For example, each government is changing its policies to tackle the pandemic. As a result, the situation became chaotic and teachers in France executed strikes in the beginning of 2022.
However, the question here is that is the pandemic the last unpredictable and uncontrollable incident around us? The answer can be “No”. Thus, the more important thing is that organizations as well as we should be more adaptable and flexible.
