According to the data, a total sales of Nissan’s electric Kei car, which is “Sakura”, exceeded 40 thousand in June, 2023. The Japanese company achieved this milestone for only one year after its inauguration. In addition, the market share of Sakura in the Japanese electric vehicle market was 40% in the same period. Therefore, we can easily say that Sakura is increasing its presence in the Japanese EV market.
Of course, the Japanese EV market is still smaller than other big countries such as China, the US and EU. For example, about 20% of new sales of automotive in China was an EV in 2022. On the other hand, only 2% of new sales of automotive in Japan was an EV in the same year.
What’s more, the ratio of imported EV in Japan was 6% in 2014. However, this number was increased by 21% in 2022. It means that non-Japanese automotive manufacturers can gain the market share of the Japanese EV market. There are several big automotive manufactures in Japan such as Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki and others. However, these companies cannot show their presence in the EV market not only outside Japan but also their home market. Thus, the success of Sakura can be a good example to turn the situation around.
